Clarify your hair with baking soda

What you’ll make: A clarifying blend

What you’ll need: ½ a cup of baking soda, ½ a cup of shampoo, 1 cup of room temperature water, extra small bowl, t-shirt (preferably one you don’t wear anymore)

How you’ll make it: Pour ½ a cup of baking soda and ½ a cup of shampoo into the bowl. Add water and mix until ingredients are properly blended. Apply mixture to hair and leave in for 5-7 minutes. Wash out with lukewarm water and wrap your hair in a t-shirt to dry. (A t-shirt causes less breakage compared to a towel.)
WARNING – Do not leave the mixture in your hair for too long or the baking soda will dry out your hair, making it prone to breakage.

How long it’ll take: 10-20 minutes

How often you should clarify your hair: Every 3-4 months or more frequently if you use a lot of products in your hair. As you see after reading this blog post, I don’t put a lot of products in my hair so I clarify my hair with this mixture every 3-4 months, and each time before I put my hair in extension braids for several months.

Deep condition your hair with honey and extra virgin olive oil

What you’ll make: Homemade deep conditioner

What you’ll need: ½ a cup of honey, ½ a cup of extra virgin olive oil (evoo), extra small bowl, warm water, t-shirt, shower cap, scarf

How you’ll make it: Pour ½ a cup of honey and ½ a cup of extra virgin olive oil into the bowl. Put the bowl in a pot or a large bowl full of hot water to melt the honey (do not microwave). Mix honey and evoo together and massage onto hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and then wrap up with a scarf (this keeps the heat locked in). Leave in for 1-3 hours then wash out with store-bought conditioner that doesn’t have sulphate, paraben, alcohol, or other harmful chemicals. Wrap your hair in a t-shirt and/or air dry.

How long it’ll take: 1-3 hours

How often you should deep condition your hair: Every 3-4 months or more often if your hair is really dry or gets hard (makes it difficult to comb and manage).

Style your hair with Shea butter and other super food for hair

Shake well to mix all ingredients together. Use mixture to style your hair in the morning, anything time of day, for outing, or for bed.

How long it’ll take: 10-15 minutes

How often you should spray your hair: Daily

Styling cream / hair butter

What you’ll make: A styling cream / hair butter

What you’ll need: A container to store the cream, Shea butter, coconut oil, vitamin e oil, your choice of essential oil for scent

How you’ll make it: Mix Shea butter (do not melt) and coconut oil (do no melt) in a bowl. Add vitamin e oil and your choice of essential oil. Mix all ingredients together thoroughly. Put the mixed cream/butter in the container for storage and daily use.

How long it’ll take: 10-20 minutes

How often you should butter your hair: Once or twice a week (depending on well your hair retains moisture) or as needed. Make a new batch whenever you run out.

TIP – Use this hair butter when you do the L.O.C (liquid, oil, cream) method. Read our blog post about how to do the L.O.C method.
